This Tahini Hollandaise recipe is a rich and creamy sauce to top your benedicts, scrambles, home fries, and hash browns with no butter! This dairy free Hollandaise with tahini is great for a flavorful brunch addition.
Serve this delicious dairy free Hollandaise sauce without butter over grilled asparagus, eggs benedict (or vegan ‘eggs’ benedict) or a drizzled over a pile of sheet pan hash browns.
Weekend benedicts are a favorite on our homestead, and this tahini hollandaise sauce is the absolute perfect sauce to drizzle over your benny! I’ve made a few different Hollandaise sauces (one with chickpeas, and one with silken tofu) and this tahini version may be the best one yet – made with no butter.
It’s a bright and lemony sauce that goes so well with savory breakfast benedicts or veggies. We enjoyed this hollandaise sauce over my sheet pan hash browns and WOW, it stole the show.

What’s In This Sesame Hollandaise Sauce?
I cook with fresh produce from my garden and from Misfits Market– they sell fantastic fruit, vegetables, & pantry staples at a discounted price. We get Misfit boxes every other week and love picking out favorite produce for delivery. Get $10 off your first box here!
- Tahini: A fantastic and flavorful spread made from ground sesame seeds. I use this tahini which is fantastic in any dish. It adds a nutty and sweet flavor, I absolutely love this tahini!
- Lemon Juice: Use fresh lemons if you have it, or this really great bottled lemon that you can keep in your pantry if you don’t have fresh lemons. This organic lemon is great for dressings, dips, and even cocktails – and it tastes fresh, which is great to have around if you don’t use lemon juice everyday but still want to keep some around.
- Olive Oil: I like to use this fruity olive oil which has a fantastic flavor and deep color- it’s really inexpensive online here, so I keep a few liters stocked up in my pantry. For the quality of oil you get, it’s an excellent value, I would highly recommend!
- Hot Water – you can use boiling water, or just hot tap water.
- Garlic
- Mustard Powder: I love adding this mustard powder to my recipes – it adds a nice sharpness and bright yellow color.
- Turmeric – a staple in our spice cabinet!
- Paprika – for a hint of spice and great flavor! Also, makes a beautiful garnish for this sauce.
- Salt
The Best Blender for Making Sauces
I’ve owned a lot of blenders, but my Vitamix is definitely the best one I’ve owned. This high-speed blender will blend even the toughest of ingredients into pulp. I prefer using my blender to my food processor for sauces like this or homemade hummus, as it’s much easier to clean the Vitamix. This is definitely one kitchen appliance we use on a daily basis!
How Do I Make Hollandaise Sauce without Butter?
- To a blender, add the tahini, lemon juice, garlic, and HALF of the hot water (save the other half), mustard powder, turmeric, and salt. Blend until the sauce is a smooth and creamy consistency.
- If it is too thick, add more hot water, 1 tablespoon at a time until it reaches your desired consistency. The thickness will depend on what kind of tahini you use (some brands are more smooth than others)!
- Pour the finished sauce into a ramekin or serving dish, and sprinkle extra paprika for garnish. Drizzle over vegetables, benedicts, or hash browns.
Note: this is not a classic Hollandaise by any means, it’s a dairy free version that is made without butter. If you are looking for the real deal, you can find Julia Child’s recipe here!
