What’s In This Rice Cooker Oatmeal Recipe?
I cook with fresh produce from my garden and from Misfits Market– they sell fantastic fruit, vegetables, & pantry staples at a discounted price. We get Misfit boxes every other week and love picking out favorite produce for delivery. Get $10 off your first box here!
- Rolled Oats: I like using whole rolled oats for this recipe. You can use steel cut oatmeal too. Don’t use instant oats, as they can become mushy when cooked. Whole oats or Irish oats are best, as they have a chewy texture and nuttier flavor than quick regular oatmeal.
- Fruit: it’s fall so I had delicious fresh apples that were simple to toss in! But this recipe is versatile in that you can use any fruit you’d like! Berries, pears, plums, or peaches would be particularly delicious.
- Cinnamon: cooks in the oats for a warm spicy flavor
- Agave nectar, or other natural sweetener
- Flaxseeds: I like to add some ground flax for fiber and the sweet nutty flavor it brings
- Pinch of salt, if desired
- Water: I used filtered tap water
The Best Oatmeal Toppings
- We love berries, walnuts, and flaxseeds to top our hot oatmeal, but here are some great suggestions.
- Maple syrup or brown sugar for added sweetness.
- Dried fruit like cranberries, raisins, chopped apricots, or dried figs- chop larger fruit into tiny pieces.
- Nuts or seeds – pumpkin seeds, or pepitas, are a favorite of ours.
- Honey
- Butter
- Cup of milk or cream, if desired for a rich add-in!
What Do I Need to Make Rice-Cooker Oatmeal?
This is one of our favorite easy recipes, and it only takes a few minutes to prep! First of all, get your oats ready. Rolled oats are perfect – make sure to use rolled oats or steel-cut oats and not quick oats for this one. Rolled oats are heartier and will keep their shape while cooking.
And get your trusty rice cooker out. I have a basic rice cooker that has lasted us years and years – nothing too fancy! It’s one of our favorite kitchen appliances and gets weekly use. It’s great for cooking rice, lentils, quinoa, and now oats!
You can use a slow cooker or pressure cooker (or Instant Pot) too if it has a “Porridge setting’ or an ‘oatmeal setting’ for this easy recipe.
How to Make Oatmeal in a Rice Cooker
OK it really doesn’t get easier than this! My rice cooker has a ‘quick cook’ mode for rice which ends up being about 30 minutes. I found that to be the perfect setting for this oatmeal, but keep in mind your rice cooker model and cooking time may vary.
- Add the oats, fruit, and remaining ingredients to rice cooker pot, and stir well to combine.
- Set Rice Cooker on ‘Porridge’ or ‘Rice’ or ‘Quick Cook’ mode (which ever your rice cooker model has). Oatmeal should cook for about 30 minutes. Once you’ve selected your mode, press Start.
- Once the oatmeal is finished cooking, give it a good stir. Taste and adjust seasoning as needed, adding extra agave or cinnamon as desired.
- Add toppings, and serve this super creamy oatmeal hot!
