What’s In This Vegan Caramelized Red Onions Recipe?
- Red Onions: I used large red onions, which are super bright and flavorful – they caramelize best!
- Olive Oil: I like to use this fruity Zoe olive oil which has a fantastic flavor and deep color- it’s really inexpensive online here, so I keep a few liters stocked up in my pantry. For the quality of oil you get, it’s an excellent value, I would highly recommend!
- Pink Himalayan Sea Salt: I like to use a pink Himalayan Sea Salt in my kitchen, which has more natural minerals than plain processed table salt. It’s fairly inexpensive, so I’d recommend this salt if you’re looking for an easy way to level up your spice pantry.
- White Wine: I used a pinot grigio which coincidentally is also my favorite wine to drink…. so of course I had a glass too! Use a nice wine that you would drink, any fruity white will work.
- Worcestershire Sauce: for that unbelievably rich umami flavor, but make sure you use a vegan variety if you don’t eat meat (some can contain anchovies). Annie’s makes a great vegan Worcestershire sauce you can buy here!
- Garlic: I use fresh garlic when I have it, and this great jarred organic garlic when I don’t have fresh. It’s actually super convenient to have pre-chopped garlic on hand for quick and easy meal prep.

Can I Caramelize Red Onions?
Heck yeah!
- In a Dutch Oven or other heavy lidded pot, add the onions, olive oil, and sea salt. Saute on medium heat, and stir with a wooden spoon for 5 minutes until the onions begin to reduce.
- Turn heat to low, and saute for 10 more minutes with the lid off the pot. Add the white wine and cook for 10 minutes more.
- Add the vegan Worcestershire sauce and the minced garlic, and stir. Cook for the remaining 5 minutes on medium heat – the onions should be soft, brown, and flavorful!
- Add the caramelized onions to burgers, risotto, dips, or pastas – mangia!
