OK, our lemon basil plant is taking over our Aerogarden at the moment!  We have a 7 pod Aerogarden and we have: lemon basil, Genovese basil, parsley, and sage. Our lemon basil is starting to creep into parsley territory, so I’ve been pruning and making these delicious lemon basil smoothies in the morning for my husband and I.

Lemon basil (or lemon balm) is a fantastic citrusy addition to your daily smoothie. It has a very sweet subtle flavor that pairs so nicely with fresh fruit – this is one fun smoothie you HAVE to try!

Grow Fresh Lemon Balm in Your Kitchen All Year Long

We got this great 6-Pod Aerogarden which is fantastic for growing herbs in the winter.  We actually got it when we lived in a smaller apartment, but even now that we own an acreage we still use it year-round!  I love growing herbs on my countertop like fresh basil, dill, mint, sage, thyme, parsley, and lemon balm.

It uses LED lights and water, so no messy soil needed – you can have fresh herbs at your fingertips any time. I love picking a few springs of parsley to chop on pastas, adding basil leaves to soups, and tossing some dill in with my pasta salads. This Aerogarden is a great gift for anyone who would like fresh herbs… no big kitchen or green thumb required!

What’s In This Lemon Balm Smoothie Recipe?

Be sure to visit the recipe card below for full ingredient amounts and recipe instructions!

  • Lemon Basil Leaves: also called Lemon Balm
  • Pineapple
  • Mango
  • Banana: add 1 banana or some of this great banana powder. During the pandemic we’ve been limiting our grocery deliveries, and adding a tablespoon of this banana powder to every smoothie has been a great way to get nutrition in.
  • Chia Seeds: these add thickness to the smoothie, and tons of plant-based nutrients!  I always try to add a scoop to my smoothies – they add a major texture without changing the flavor.
  • Water
  • Ice
  • Plant-Based Protein Powder

Frozen Fruit Recipes For the Win!

I used frozen fruit for this recipe instead of making them from scratch. By using freezer ingredients, I can stock up when they are on sale, and use them in all kinds of great dishes. It saves me a trip to the store, and I can have frozen fruit to use in smoothies in no time. Check out all my recipes that use Freezer Ingredients– great for those days when you want a meal ready fast!

If you grow lemon basil or lemon balm in your garden, you can cut the leaves, wash them, and put them in an airtight bag to freeze. That way you can enjoy frozen lemon basil in your recipes and smoothies all year long!
