Unsweetened, unflavored or plain oat milk works great in both savory and sweet dishes!  I use it in baked goods in place of milk, and also in savory dishes in place of cream.

It has a very mild flavor and tastes great – perfect for cooking in savory recipes and using as a substitution for dairy milk.

This Unsweetened Oat Milk Recipe Is:

  • Creamy
  • Simple
  • Easy to make
  • Made with Pantry-Staple Ingredients
  • Earthy
  • Great in Sweet or Savory Recipes
  • Vegan, Gluten Free, Dairy Free

If you are looking for a sweeter version, look no further! My Chocolate Oat Milk recipe is one of my most popular recipes on this site: it’s creamy and delicious, not too sweet!  If you are looking for an oat milk recipe that is unflavored and has a more natural taste this savory oat milk is perfect!

What Do I Need To Make Oat Milk?

See the recipe card below for full ingredient amounts and recipe instructions!

  • Old Fashioned Oats: Use old fashioned oats, steel cut oats, or rolled oats – NOT quick cooking ones. The quick cooking oats get slimy and that is not what you want in your drink. Old Fashioned Oats are the perfect texture.
  • Water: use any kind you would normally drink (tap, bottled, filtered)
  • Pinch of salt: I use a pink Himalayan sea salt in my kitchen, it’s great in this oat milk recipe.

Equipment

  • A High-Speed Blender: We have this Vitamix blender and let me tell you, we sure use it!  It’s great for smoothies, making nut and oat milks, and blended sauces of all kinds.
  • A Nut Milk Bag, Cheesecloth, or a Fine Strainer: I invested in these awesome nylon nut milk bags, and they are great for oat milk, nut milks, and also straining honey when we do a honey harvest from our beehives (seriously, they are amazing).   I’d recommend a nut milk bag to make homemade oat milk as cheesecloth can get stringy, but you can use cheesecloth or a fine mesh strainer.

Make Oat Milk Gluten Free for a Plant-Based Version

This gluten free oat milk recipe is a simple meal to make without the wheat – make sure you are using 100% certified gluten free oats. I’m all about making recipes gluten free when I can. Gluten free cooking does NOT have to be bland, boring, or flavorless… It’s quite the opposite when done right.

Ensure you use certified gluten free oats!

How Do I Make This Pantry Oat Milk Recipe?

  1. .Combine 1 cup oats, 4 cups water, and pinch of salt to a blender.  Allow the ingredients to sit for 10 minutes before blending.
  2. Blend on high for 30 seconds.  Strain immediately though a fine mesh strainer, cheese cloth, or a nut milk bag. Allow the milk to strain naturally, don’t press or force it through the bag (this can cause it to become gummy/slimy).
  3. Use as you would regular milk: pour over cereal, use in baked goods, or add to savory recipes for a hint of creaminess.

I tried Elmhurst brand to replace milk in my morning latte and loved it, except the cost. So I tried making this. It tastes great on it’s own but it makes my coffee watery. Wondering if I should double the oats? Also – do you or your readers use the leftover oats for anything? It feels wasteful to toss them! Wondering if I should try adding ingredients and dehydrating into a granola, if that’s even possible.

Will be making this today as I have a recipe that calls for oat milk.
So many of the ready made versions do not say if they are purity protocol oats. They also will not answer the question when asked. I personally do not recommend Bob’s as they now wash the oats of any wheat that may happen during harvest (the same process used by Cheerios). Sadly the process is not perfect and people are getting sick. I made a lovely blueberry crisp with Bob’s and got very sick. I recommend GF Harvest. Look them up online. They have a lovely story how this company started. Sorry to burst the balloon but us celiacs must stand up for what is right for us. Thanks.

Hello Barb – I store the oat milk in an airtight container (I use a mason jar), and it should keep for up to 2 days. If it begins to seperate, just shake it before serving.
