I love compiling together my old family recipes, and these kolachy cookies were originally from  my grandma on my mom’s side! This family recipe was passed down to me by my Aunt Mary Ann, who gave me a few wonderful family recipes that I didn’t have before, like our old fashioned beef stew. Mary Ann also is an author of a fantastic book series for kids, and you can check out her children’s books here!

These cookies were an unbelievable treat – the dough only has 3 ingredients and the jam filling added a great burst of flavor. The hubby and I both gave these 10/10 – thanks grandma for passing this recipe down!

What’s In Kolachy Cookies with Apricot Jam?

Be sure to visit the recipe card below for full ingredient amounts and recipe instructions!

  • Cream Cheese – for the dough. My grandma specifies in the notes “use Philadelphia cream cheese, don’t use ‘cheap’ brand” – and trust me, my grandma was a very frugal woman, so if she recommends a specific brand I’m going to take her up on that đŸ™‚
  • Butter – I always use unsalted butter to reduce the amount of sodium in my cooking.
  • All Purpose Flour: I use all purpose flour for all my recipes, I love the consistency and texture of the crumb this flour produces. If you are gluten free, then a gluten free flour would be a nice substitute in this dish.  If you want to keep it a little wholesome, you can use half whole wheat flour as well.
  • Apricot Jam
  • Powdered sugar – to give these cookies a little extra sweetness after baking!

How Do I Make Kolachy Cookies?

  1. Mix softened cream cheese and butter together. Add the flour and mix well to combine.
  2. Preheat oven to 325 degrees Fahrenheit
  3. Roll out dough onto a floured surface. Cut dough into 4-inch squares.
  4. Fill each square with approximately 1/2 teaspoon apricot jam. Take diagonal corners and fold them over the jam, to make the kolachy shape.
  5. Place the cookies onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake cookies for 30 minutes until browned.
  6. Allow cookies to cook before enjoying.

A Note on Forming the Cookies

My aunt recommends using tiny muffin cups instead of rolling. That way, you can line each up with the dough, and fill with the apricot jam and bake. It’s a great shortcut to use if you don’t want to roll out the dough by hand.
