If you’re looking for a fun cocktail with a little twist, this blood orange vodka drink is the perfect one to stir up. When you can find fresh blood oranges in season in the late winter or early spring, this cocktail  is the perfect way to use them up!  I got some absolutely gorgeous blood oranges in my grocery box this week. I made a delicious blood orange salad, a bright & fresh blood orange vinaigrette, and this delicious cocktail.

I was coming up with a fun cocktail last weekend, and wanted to feature the fresh blood oranges along with some vodka. But, unlike a screwdriver, I wanted to add some triple sec and simple syrup too for a fun orange-y twist.

What’s Special about Blood Oranges?

Blood oranges are a variety of orange, which have a deep dark purple interior. They taste very similar to a regular orange, however the color is different from a pigment called anthocyanin inside the orange.

They are sweet and fresh tasting, like a classic navel orange. They are in season in winter, like most citrus fruits, and you can typically find them in stores from December through April.
