What’s In This Vegan Caramelized Onions Recipe?

See the recipe card below for full ingredient amounts and recipe instructions!

  • Onions: use sweet onions which caramelize best!
  • Olive Oil: I like to use this fruity olive oil which has a fantastic flavor and deep color- it’s really inexpensive online, so I keep a few liters stocked up in my pantry.  For the quality of oil you get, it’s an excellent value, I would highly recommend!
  • Salt
  • White Wine: I used a pinot grigio which coincidentally is also my favorite wine to drink…. so of course I had a glass too!  Use a nice wine that you would drink, any fruity white will work.
  • Worcestershire Sauce: for that unbelievably rich umami flavor, but make sure you use a vegan variety if you don’t eat meat (some can contain anchovies).
  • Garlic: I use fresh garlic when I have it, and this great jarred organic garlic when I don’t have fresh. It’s actually super convenient to have pre-chopped garlic on hand for quick and easy meal prep.

How Do I Make Caramelized Onions?

  1. In a Dutch Oven or other heavy lidded pot, add the onions, olive oil, and sea salt.  Saute on medium heat, and stir with a wooden spoon for 5 minutes until the onions begin to reduce.
  2. Turn heat to low, and saute for 10 more minutes with the lid off the pot. Add the white wine and cook for 10 minutes more.
  3. Add the vegan Worcestershire sauce and the minced garlic, and stir.  Cook for the remaining 5 minutes on medium heat – the onions should be soft, brown, and flavorful!
  4. Add the caramelized onions to burgers, risotto, dips, or pastas – enjoy!
