Can I Make Tzatziki without Dill?

Tzatziki with no dill? No problem!  While dill is a traditional ingredient in tzatziki sauces, you can still make a delicious and tasty version without it. This recipe is great if you have someone who doesn’t like dill but still want to make this creamy yogurt dip…. or, if you’re like me, you go to make a shawarma and don’t have any fresh dill on hand, so you improvise. 

The fresh mint is a fantastic substitute and gives this dip a nice earthy flavor.

Using Mint in Sauces

I like using fresh mint leaves for this recipe, rather than dried mint. The fresh mint gives this yogurt and cucumber dip a wonderfully fragrant flavor.

What’s In This Cucumber Mint Tzatziki Sauce Recipe?

  • Greek Yogurt – tzatziki is traditionally made with plain Greek Yogurt, so I like to use it for a thick and creamy dip. You could also use a non-Greek plain yogurt or sour cream which will give you a thinner sauce.
  • Garlic – I like to use fresh garlic for this recipe, as each garlic clove adds more flavor to this Greek sauce than jarred garlic.
  • Extra-virgin olive oil
  • Fresh Lemon Juice
  • Sea Salt & Black Pepper
  • Cucumber
  • Fresh Mint – we have wild mint growing all over our homestead, so I picked a bunch to go with this fantastic dip. Fresh herbs make this sauce so delicious!

The Best Cucumbers for Tzatziki

I like to use English cucumbers, which have less seeds and juice, and tend to be sweeter. Persian cucumbers also work great! I like to halve my cucumber lengthwise, scoop out the seeds, and chop the cucumber for the sauce.

You can also use grated cucumber too instead of chopped. Grate your cucumbers with a box grater, and make sure to squeeze out any cucumber juice or excess moisture from the shredded cucumber before stirring into the sauce.

How Do I Make This Tzatziki without Dill?

  1. In medium bowl, combine Greek yogurt, garlic cloves, olive oil, lemon juice, salt, and pepper. Stir well to combine.
  2. Prep your cucumbers – peel if desired, halve lengthwise and scoop out any seeds. Chop the cucumber and set aside.
  3. Combine yogurt sauce with fresh cucumber and the chopped mint. Add a little fresh pepper to garnish and enjoy with pita chips, fresh vegetables, bell peppers, or serve on a Mediterranean salad!
  4. Store leftover sauce in an airtight container for up to 3 days in the refrigerator.
