If you love avocados for breakfast but want to change it up from basic avocado toast, this tasty this grapefruit avocado salad is the perfect recipe for you!  It may seem like a unusual combination, but diced avocado and grapefruit together makes an amazing pair and the flavors balance out each other perfectly.

I love this avocado grapefruit salad as a post-work out meal. Its satisfying, sweet, and so refreshing.  This is one of my favorite flavor combinations – so when I buy a bag of avocados from the store, I always buy a bag of grapefruits too (which are also amazing for grapefruit gin gimlets)!

Why This Recipe Works

  • It’s simple – just 5 ingredients you can find at any grocery store.
  • It’s a great summertime dish: it’s light, refreshing, and flavorful.
  • The citrus is sweet and tangy, perfect with the avocado.
  • Anyone can make this! No cooking required, just a little chopping. See our step-by-step instructions below for how to make this!

Ingredients

Ingredients for this salad: ruby red grapefruit, fresh avocado, limes, basil, and pink salt.
  • Grapefruit – I love a good tart ruby red! You can use any variety of grapefruit you prefer.
  • Avocado – perfectly ripe, pitted & cubed.
  • Lime juice – use fresh if you can.
  • Basil – We grow a ton of basil in our garden, so it’s great to add a few leaves for an amazing flavor.
  • Pink salt – optional for a little flavor, but not required.

Substitutions and Additions

  • You can use lemon juice instead of lime, if desired.
  • For a little extra sweetness, drizzle fresh honey on top!
  • Or sprinkle sugar on top of the grapefruit, and lightly broil it before adding it to the salad for a fancier version.

FAQs and Pro Tips

What’s the best grapefruit to use for fruit salad?

I like large ruby red grapefruits, which are sweet, tart, and pair nicely with the avocado in this salad.

How do I store this grapefruit salad?

Store any leftover salad in an airtight container in the refrigerator. The lime juice will help keep the avocado from browning.

When is the best time to eat this salad?

Anytime! It makes a great breakfast, snack, post-workout treat, or even a dessert. The sweet, tart, and savory combo tastes wonderful anytime.

Pro Tips

  • When slicing the grapefruit, make sure to remove any pith from the fruit before adding it to your salad. I like to slice the grapefruit in half, remove the skin, and carefully cut out each segment of grapefruit from it’s pith.
  • For a fancier version, sprinkle the grapefruit with sugar and caramelize it under your oven’s broiler for 1-2 minutes before adding the segments to the salad.
