Making grits in the rice cooker couldn’t be easier. They’re buttery and tasty, and and the rice cooker does all the work. I love to serve these grits for breakfast with my favorite apple pie smoothie or pomegranate fruit salad.
If you’re looking for the simplest (read: laziest) breakfast that requires almost no work, this grits recipe is for you! Add all ingredients to your rice cooker, stir, push ‘Start’ and you have a fantastic breakfast in 30 minutes. I first had grits when I was in Nashville at the infamous Pancake Pantry, and have loved them ever since.
Grits are a great sweet or savory breakfast recipe, and a wonderful swap if you want to switch up your daily oatmeal or smoothie. You can add cheese if you like, but my favorite grits toppings are a simple pad of butter and honey.

What’s In These Plant Based Grits Recipe?
Be sure to visit the recipe card below for full ingredient amounts and recipe instructions!
- Corn Meal – I love this fantastic corn meal for these grits. They’re organic and have the perfect texture – and the only ingredient is organic corn. No preservatives or additives.
- Water
- Sea salt
- Butter – I like to use unsalted butter to reduce the amount of sodium in my cooking.
- Honey: As beekeepers, we have plenty of raw honey so I try to use it in all my recipes instead of sugar. I’d recommend trying a local farmers market to find the best raw honey in your area. Or else, raw organic honey is the next best thing.
How Do You Make Grits in the Rice Cooker?
- To the inner pot of the rice cooker, add the corn meal, water, half of the butter, and salt. Stir well.
- Set your Rice Cooker to ‘Quick Cook’ or set the timer ’30 Minutes’ – this will vary on your model, however the grits need 30 minutes to fully cook.
- Once grits have finished cooking, open the lid carefully, and stir the grits in the rice cooker. If there are any clumps, break them up with a fork and stir until creamy.
- Serve the grits with an extra pad of butter, and top with fresh honey (or cheese, or any of your favorite toppings). Enjoy!

A southern inspiration that sure is tasty
Thanks for giving the method of how to make grits in your rice cooker. However, I want to point out so you can change this that it’s not plant based. It’s vegetarian and that’s something different than plant based which is vegan. Butter comes from animal fat. Plants based people don’t eat butter.
A warm and delicious start to my day
