This smoky tofu recipe is a flavorful, simple, vegetarian dish to make in the electric smoker or BBQ. This is one of the best smoked tofu recipes I’ve followed: protein + spice + smoker makes for an amazing smoked tofu that is flavorful & super high protein.
This is the best smoked tofu for using in recipes like soups, stews, and stir fries. I made these in my electric smoker, and they turned out amazing!
Our friends gave us an electric smoker for a housewarming gift a while ago, and it has been great to smoke amazing things that aren’t meat. We’ve smoked some really fun ingredients like this tofu recipe, hard boiled eggs, and even Cheese-Itz (highly recommend!). All taste awesome, and you can do so much with an electric smoker besides meat. Our smoker has 4 shelves, so I like to throw in a tray of tofu, usually at the top if we have extra room. I add the smoked tofu to soups and stir fries which gives those dishes extra flavor.

- Tofu: I love using this shelf-stable tofu, which is great to stock up the pantry with. Keeping easy plant-based protein in the pantry is a MUST, so this tofu is a staple in our household!
- Olive Oil: I like coating the tofu in a little bit of this super flavorful olive oil, which helps the spices stick to the tofu. This oil is a really great value online, and I always keep it stocked in my pantry.
- Agave Syrup: My husband swears by adding a sweet element to anything we smoke. I really like using this raw organic agave syrup because it’s a natural and sustainable sweetener, plus it is ridiculously inexpensive online so I always keep a few of these bottles in my pantry.
- Montreal Steak Spice: This is our absolute favorite spice blend, we put it on everything!
How to Smoke Tofu in an Electric Smoker
- Set the electric smoker to 250 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Slice the tofu into 1 inch slabs. I found the thinner you slice them the more flavor they absorb.
- In a foil packet or a aluminum tray, add the tofu in an even layer and top with agave, olive oil, and seasonings of choice (we use Montreal Steak Spice!).
- Place the tofu in an upper rack, and smoke tofu for 6 to 8 hours.

By building meals around vegetarian pantry staples and swapping in a few plant-based ingredients you can make better meals for you and your family. I made a list of my 125 favorite vegan pantry ingredients that we use on a weekly basis, and check out all my vegan recipes here that are on The Herbeevore. Smoky Tofu
Ingredients
- 2 12-ounce packages tofu
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 2 tablespoons agave nectar
- 2 tablespoons corn starch
- 1 tablespoon seasoning of choice I used Canadian steak spice
Instructions
- Set the electric smoker to 250 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Slice the tofu into 1 inch slabs. I found the thinner you slice them the more flavor they absorb. Place tofu slabs in a foil packet or aluminum tray.
- In a small bowl, add the olive oil and agave and stir well to combine. Using a silicon food brush, brush the top of the tofu with the olive oil and agave mixture. This will help your seasoning stick. Add Montreal Steak Spice evenly on top of the tofu.
- Place the tofu in an upper rack, and smoke tofu for 6 to 8 hours.
