This dinner is a fantastic recipe to make with extra tomatoes. Serve this simple pasta with easy homemade garlic knots, thick sourdough garlic bread, or a fresh side salad with pesto vinaigrette dressing.
Angel hair pomodoro is one of our favorite easy weeknight meals! The word pomodoro means tomato in Italian – literally translated to ‘apple of gold’ which couldn’t be more perfect. In this pomodoro sauce, fresh tomatoes shine.
I love that this pasta is simple to cook on a weeknight, yet elegant enough to serve to guests. I first was introduced to pomodoro sauce when I visited a fantastic Italian restaurant in Laguna Beach, CA called Pomodoro when I first moved to the Los Angeles area. The restaurant has since closed, however I love making that simple and delicious tomato sauce to this day.
This sweet Italian tomato pasta is perfect when you want a fresh sauce that pairs well a long pasta like capellini (angel hair) or spaghetti.

Ingredients You’ll Need
- Angel Hair (Capellini) Pasta – I love the thin, delicate strands of angel hair pasta, they pair perfectly with this bright fresh sauce.
- Fresh Tomatoes – I used garden cherry tomatoes for mine, and also canned.
- Canned Whole Tomatoes – an essential in any good tomato sauce is getting the best quality canned tomatoes you can find! I always use San Marzano tomatoes.
- Extra virgin olive oil
- Garlic
- Fresh Basil
- Sea salt and black pepper
Substitutions and Additions
- If you want to make this with all fresh tomatoes, you can add an additional 16 ounces of fresh tomatoes and skip the canned.
- You can use any fresh tomatoes for this recipe, not just cherry tomatoes. You can use Roma tomatoes, grape tomatoes, or even beefsteak tomatoes which have been diced.
- Top with fresh grated parmesan (or a vegan version) if desired.
- Serve with your favorite grilled protein.

FAQs and Pro Tips
If I have leftover sauce, I store it in an airtight container and refrigerate for up to 3 days.
Yes! If you have leftovers, allow the sauce to cool and place it in freezer bag. Freeze for up to 6 months. When ready to eat, thaw the sauce, and heat for 15 minutes over low heat until simmering.
While fresh basil is traditional in pomodoro, you can use dried basil as a substitution. Instead of 1/4 cup of fresh basil, use 1 tablespoon of dried instead.
Pro Tips
- For extra flavor, broil or char your cherry tomatoes for a few minutes, to get a delicious burst tomato flavor in the pasta sauce!
- This is a great way to use up extra garden tomatoes, perfect for summer. If you find fresh tomatoes at your local farmer’s market, stock up and make an extra batch of this sauce to freeze for the winter months.
