I love a good milkshake – especially one with whole frozen fruits, Greek yogurt for added protein, and a little bit of creamy and delicious whipped cream to top! I had a fantastic milkshake at Gema’s Cafe recently on my trip to Death Valley and it was SO good I had to make a version at home.
And you don’t need a fancy milkshake machine to make it – just a regular blender will work perfectly. You can also adjust the sweetness to make it exactly how you like it too, I give some serving suggestions below if you want a sweeter or a more natural smoothie.
Notes from the Kitchen
- This milkshake is thick, creamy, and perfectly sweet!
- It’s made with fruit and honey, so it has a nice natural sweetness that you can adjust based on your tastes.
- The Greek yogurt not only adds flavor and texture, but gives the milkshake added protein without adding protein powder.
- Made in one blender, this milkshake is a super simple snack or dessert you can enjoy any time.
- It’s a great recipe for frozen strawberries, if you happen to have any you need to use.
- Cooks of any skill level can successfully make this dish by following our step by step photos and directions below.
Ingredients You’ll Need
What makes plant-based cooking easier for me is keeping whole ingredients on hand: beans, lentils & grains, and lots of fresh produce. I order many of those from Misfits Market, which focuses on reducing food waste! Get $25 off your first order if you’d like to try it.
The base of this recipe is frozen strawberries. I use 2 cups per batch (or 1 cup per smoothie) making it a great way to get your berries in. I also use a frozen banana, but you can use fresh bananas too.
I also use plain unsweetened Greek yogurt and milk in this recipe. You can use any milk you prefer to drink. I actually made this with regular and also with soy milk too (which was delicious)!
This milkshake also uses honey and vanilla extract to add sweetness and a really nice flavor. And, if you prefer, you can add whipped cream on top. I like to add it, as it’s a nice little treat.
Additions and Substitutions
You can use a sweetened or flavored Greek yogurt (like vanilla or honey flavor) in this recipe too. Just omit the honey so it’s not too sweet.
For natural sweetness, you can omit the honey and just use the fruit. Or you can swap out the honey for another natural sweetener, like maple syrup or agave nectar.
Use any milk you prefer for this recipe. Just be sure it’s a plain and unsweetened version (if you are using a dairy-free milk or yogurt).
To make it higher in protein, you can add 1 scoop of a vanilla protein powder!

Recipe FAQs
Yes, you can use fresh strawberries for this drink, but be sure to add 1/2 cup ice as well, so the drink has a milkshake-like consistency.
Yes, that would be a great option! If you do use vanilla yogurt, you can skip adding the vanilla extract in the milkshake as well.
I recommend using a high-speed blender (like a Vitamix or Ninja) but you can use a regular blender, it just make take longer to get fully smooth and creamy.
Expert Tips
- If you blender is having a hard time blending the strawberries or siezes up, you can add 1/2 cup more milk and blend it until smooth and creamy.
