As a beekeeper, I love using my honey in fun new recipes!  This honey garlic sauce is made without soy sauce for a sweet and tangy dipping sauce.  Great with almost any protein, this honey recipe is one you will BUZZ about.

What I love about this sauce is the amazing flavor from the raw honey. It’s so much better than using plain white sugar, as honey is a natural sweetener.  I like to keep our honey raw (not pasteurized) so it preserves the flavors  and keeps the honey pure, straight out of the hive.  You can find raw honey from your local beekeeper, at a farmer’s market, or at some specialty grocery stores!

What’s In This Honey Garlic Sauce Without Soy Sauce?

Be sure to visit the recipe card below for full ingredient amounts and recipe instructions!

  • Honey: As beekeepers, we have plenty of raw honey so I try to use it my recipes instead of sugar.  I’d recommend trying a local farmers market to find the best raw honey in your area. Or else, using a good organic honey is the next best thing.
  • Soy Sauce Alternatives – this honey garlic sauce can be made with a few different ingredients, pick your favorite below!
    • Worcestershire Sauce: I usually use Worcestershire sauce as the main ingredient in my recipe. I love low sodium Worcestershire sauce in all kinds of recipes. Some Worcestershire sauces do contain anchovies, so be sure to check the label if you are vegan or vegetarian.
    • Liquid Aminos – a fantastic soy sauce alternative, liquid aminos are concentrated amino acids that are similar in flavor to soy sauce. They do contain sodium, but a much lower amount than soy sauce. NOTE: some liquid aminos are made from soybeans, so if you eat soy free, please be sure to read the label before buying or cooking with any ingredients.
    • Coconut Aminos – like amino acids, but extracted from coconut. I love the light almost butter-y flavor of coconut aminos. I’d recommend coconut aminos for any sauce that has a tropical vibe (pineapple chicken, orange sesame tofu, etc.)
  • Raw Garlic: You can finely mince the garlic, or use a garlic press – either way will give this sauce a fantastic and bold garlicky flavor.
  • Red Chili Pepper Flakes: for a little heat! I like to add a few shakes to this recipe to give this dish a nice complex depth of flavor.

Is There a Vegan Alternative to Honey?

Yes, you can substitute out the honey in this recipe for agave nectar or maple syrup. I prefer agave nectar, it’s my go-to kitchen sweetener because it’s absolutely delicious, and buying organic agave is inexpensive online (compared to other organic sweeteners).  It also bakes well, so I like to add it to my baked goods.

This is our third year beekeeping, and we have a few hives going strong this summer.  Last year, we maintained 5  hives throughout the summer and we harvested honey 2-3 times from the stronger hives.  We had delicious light golden honey in June when the nectar flow was just getting going – it was floral and super sweet.

And as the year progressed we got a rich dark honey in October when the bees were foraging from sap.  This late honey has a herby, medicinal, almost spicy taste to it.  It’s so amazing that different tasting honey can come from the same hives, and any honey you have on hand would be great in this dressing!
