Ingredients
- Plums – I used fresh red plums that I got in my Misfits Market box. You could use any variety of plum you prefer. Sweet and ripe, they make the perfect summer bruschetta.
- Ricotta Cheese – I used a plain part-skim ricotta cheese, which is mild and creamy. It pairs so nicely with the plums and honey!
- Bread – I used a sliced French baguette and toasted the slices to make crostini.
- Extra virgin olive oil
- Fresh basil – A classic element in traditional tomato bruschetta, the basil pairs nicely with the plums and gives the filling a delicious flavor and pop of green color. If possible, use fresh basil instead of dried, as the fresh herbs bring a wonderful flavor to the filling.
- Balsamic Vinegar – It gives this bruschetta a little kick! Another great ingredient that is found in traditional bruschetta. A little goes a long way, and adds just a hint of tart to this recipe.
- Honey
- Red onion – I used a little red onion to give the filling a bit of spice and flavor! It really highlights the sweet/savory combination.
Variations and Substitutions
- You can mix in other stone fruits in with the plums if you desire. Cherries or peaches would be a great addition.
- If you don’t like ricotta cheese, you can use plain cream cheese or goat cheese instead.
- Use whole wheat, sprouted bread, or even a gluten-free bread to toast if desired.
- You can substitute maple syrup or agave nectar for the honey, if desired.
How To Make This Recipe

Step 1: Slice the baguette, and place the slices on a sheet pan. Place the pan in the oven, and broil them on high heat for 3 to 4 minutes until they begin to lightly brown. Be sure to watch the bread while it’s under the broiler so it doesn’t burn. Remove pan from the oven and set aside to cool.
Step 2: Chop the plums into bite-sized pieces about 1/4 inch thick. Place the diced plums into a large mixing bowl. Add the chopped red onion, basil, and honey. Toss well to combine.
Step 3: Spread about 1 teaspoon of ricotta cheese on each toast. Repeat until all pieces of toast are covered with the ricotta.
Step 4: Top with 1 tablespoon of the plum bruschetta mixture. Place the topped toasts on a serving plate. Repeat, adding bruschetta to each toast.
Step 5: Lightly drizzle balsamic vinegar and olive oil over each toast, and top with additional basil for garnish, if desired.
Frequently Asked Questions
Traditional bruschetta is made of ripe tomatoes, garlic, fresh basil, vinegar, olive oil, salt, and pepper. This version uses plums and honey instead of tomatoes and garlic for a sweet and fruity appetizer.
Ripe plums are even in color, have smooth skin, and should have a little give when squeezed (not be too hard or too mushy). You want ripe, sweet, juicy plums for this recipe.
You can substitute the honey in this recipe for agave nectar or maple syrup. Both are natural alternatives and would work in the dressing.
This super simple appetizer is ready in just 15 minutes! And the only cooking time is the 3-4 minutes it takes to toast the bread.
Pro Tips
- When chopping the plums, make them roughly the same size. You want the pieces small enough to be bite-sized and consistent.
- For a sweeter bruschetta, drizzle a little extra honey right before serving.
- If making this recipe ahead of time, make the plum mixture first, and refrigerate. Before serving toast the bread and spread the ricotta on.
