Easy Dehydrator Recipes To Make All Year Long

We love using our dehydrator – it makes fantastic and tasty snacks from whole foods. Homemade kale chips are a fantastic raw food to enjoy for a healthy snack anytime!

Dehydrating fruits and vegetables can be a great way to preserve and keep your vegetables longer too. For any dehydrator recipe, make sure the fruits and vegetables are as dry as possible before adding them to the dehydrator. It’s a good idea to give the kale a whirr in the salad spinner before adding my spices, and get as much water off the kale as possible. And this is a super versatile recipe, you can add many spices to the kale for different ways to add flavor!

Ingredients for Dehydrated Kale Chips

Be sure to visit the recipe card below for full ingredient amounts and recipe instructions!

  • Bunch of Kale – I used lacinato kale, or dinosaur kale, for this recipe. I’ve also used curly kale, Tuscan kale, red kale which turn out great! With any type of kale you use, make sure to wash, thoroughly dry, and chop the kale into large pieces. Remove any hard stems from the kale chips.
  • Extra virgin olive oil – I like to massage a little olive oil into the kale, which helps the spices stick to the leaves and coat the kale with flavor in each bite.
  • Nutritional Yeast – for a vegan ‘cheesy’ flavor.
  • Onion powder
  • Garlic powder
  • Cayenne pepper – for a little kick!
  • Sea salt and black pepper

How To Make Kale Chips in a Dehydrator

  1. Prep your kale. Wash kale and thoroughly dry. Using a paring knife, carefully cut out the stems from the center of the kale leaves, and discard or compost the stems. After you de-stem kale, chop into large bite-sized pieces, about 2 inches square. These will shrink in the dehydrator.
  2. To a large mixing bowl, add the chopped kale, the olive oil, nutritional yeast, onion powder, garlic powder, cayenne pepper, and salt. Mix with your hands, massaging the olive oil and spices into the kale for about 1 minute, until each piece of kale is coated.
  3. Place kale pieces on a dehydrator rack in an even, single layer, ensuring no pieces overlap one another.
  4. Set your dehydrator to 135 degrees Fahrenheit, and dehydrator for 4 hours.
  5. Store kale chips in an air-tight container, ziplock bags, or an airtight glass food storage container for up to 2 days.

These crispy kale chips are great to make with a countertop dehydrator. Mine has wire racks which fit the kale, but you can add a layer of parchment paper below the kale too.
