This recipe was given to me by my dad, who made it this year for our Thanksgiving dinner!  Let me tell you, what a treat it was. I watched him prep it in the kitchen and took fastidious notes during the process.

This cheesecake is extra creamy by using both cream cheese and sour cream in the filling. It’s also great because you can top it with any seasonal fruit you have on hand. We used blueberries (a classic), but if you have fresh strawberries in the summer, or figs in the fall,  this would be a great recipe to use them in!

What’s In This Homemade Cheesecake Recipe?

Be sure to visit the recipe card below for full ingredient amounts and recipe instructions!

  • Sour Cream – this sour cream gives the cheesecake a silky and creamy texture.
  • Cream Cheese – I use a regular cream cheese, not whipped.
  • Granulated Sugar: I like organic sugar for my recipes, I recommend it for cooking and baking.
  • Eggs – We try to get cage free / free range eggs when we can. There isn’t any nutritional difference, but I always try to support animal welfare when I can!
  • Real Vanilla Extract: it’s super important to use real pure vanilla extract, and not artificial baking vanilla flavor. This real all natural vanilla is a fantastic ingredient to give this recipe an #extra boost.
  • Lemon, zested
  • Pie Crusts – no shame in the game if you use store-bought!  I use graham cracker pie crust, and have also used delicious Oreo pie crusts too – both were excellent!
  • Toppings: Berries, Nuts, or Fruit to Top – whatever is in season and sounds good!

How Do I Make Cheesecake with Sour Cream?

  1. Remove cream cheese from refrigerator so it comes to room temperature.
  2. When softened, preheat the oven to 325 degrees Fahrenheit.
  3. In a large mixing bowl (or stand mixer), add the cheesecake ingredients: sour cream, softened cream cheese,  sugar, eggs, vanilla, and the lemon zest. Whisk until well combined, and there are no lumps in the filling. Add the filling to a 9-inch pie crust.
  4. Bake for 30 minutes. Remove the cheesecake, and allow to cook for 15 minutes.
  5. Prepare the topping: mix the sour cream, sugar, vanilla together in a bowl. Pour it on top of the cheesecake and bake for another 15 minutes.
