The best part of winter is fresh citrus fruits – and our absolute favorite are sumo oranges! They are easy to peel, super sweet, and have a wonderful, bright flavor. I buy them in bulk in the winter and make fresh juices (like our juicer ginger turmeric shots), enjoy them for a snack, and slice them into great salads like this one.

This no-cook recipe couldn’t be easier to make! Take your favorite greens, mix them with fresh sumo orange segments, and top with sweet dried cranberries and crunchy nuts. Then drizzle on a vinaigrette that takes just minutes to make from scratch (or use your favorite bottled dressing).

Ingredients You’ll Need

See our recipe card below for the full ingredient amounts and instructions.

The base of this recipe is sweet, flavorful sumo oranges. Sumo oranges are grown seasonally in the winter and spring months, making them a perfect choice for this salad. They are large, sweet, and easy to peel.

I used a spring mix with spinach for the greens. I found a mix of greens worked well. You could also use all of one type of green: baby spinach, massaged kale, or arugula would be delicious.

And I top the salad with dried cranberries and crushed pecans for extra sweetness and texture.

The dressing is made with extra virgin olive oil, garlic, fresh lemon juice, maple syrup, and salt and pepper.

Additions and Substitutions

If you want to make this recipe even quicker, you can use store-bought dressing. Look for a vinaigrette that has orange or lemon for a consistent flavor.

You can use any dried fruit in this salad as well if you dont have dried cranberries. Chopped apricots or dates would be great alternatives.

And other options for nuts include: sliced almonds, crushed walnuts, or even cashews. For a nut free version use sunflower seeds. Or add croutons for a crunchy element!

Recipe FAQs

Why are sumo oranges good in salad?

Sumo oranges are large, sweet, and juicy – perfect for big bright salads loaded with greens and fruit. Sumo citrus makes a great sweet addition to savory salads, or even in fruit salads as a bright pop.

What is the best dressing for sumo orange salad?

I found a lemon-based vinaigrette pairs nicely with the sweet citrus oranges. Our 5-minute vinaigrette has lemon juice, olive oil, dijon mustard, and maple syrup for a little extra sweetness.

How to store leftover salad?

Once you mix the salad and the dressing together, the salad is best enjoyed within a few hours. If you do have leftovers, store the salad in an airtight container, refrigerate, and enjoy within 24 hours (but it is best fresh).

Expert Tips

  • When chopping the oranges, make them roughly the same size. You want the pieces small enough to be bite-sized and consistent.
  • If making this recipe ahead of time, make the dressing first as it can be stored up to 48 hours ahead of time. Leave the salad ingredients to be mixed right before serving.
