Tuna salad has been a favorite of mine from when I was young – I loved whipping up a batch to eat with crackers or to enjoy with lettuce wraps!  I used to eat canned tuna mixed with sweet relish and mayo, but I wanted to make a better grown-up version of this classic recipe.

By adding the Greek yogurt, you get a high protein tuna salad that tastes amazing. The Greek yogurt replaces mayonnaise in this dish, and gives the tuna salad a creamy and tangy flavor.

What’s Traditional Tuna Salad Made With?

Tuna salad is traditionally made with mayonnaise, which gives it a creamy base and tangy flavor.

The Best Type of Yogurt for Tuna Salad

This recipe substitutes mayonnaise with plain Greek yogurt, which gives the tuna salad a similar flavor but with a better option.

You can use non-fat Greek yogurt, 2% or even 4% yogurt in this recipe depending on your preferences. You can even opt for a soy yogurt for a dairy-free option.

Plain Greek yogurt has fewer calories than mayo, and tastes great. Either way, the Greek yogurt makes a really great substitute for mayo in this easy recipe!

What’s In This High Protein Tuna Salad Recipe?

See the recipe card below for full ingredient amounts and recipe instructions!

  • Canned Tuna – I like using a no-salt-added tuna, which really helps to bring out the flavor of the fish. I like delicious flaky tuna, so getting a good quality can of tuna matters. Skipjack tuna or albacore tuna are great options.
  • Celery
  • Greek Yogurt – make sure it’s plain and unsweetened!  You can use a fat free Greek yogurt like this one (it’s our favorite!) or a full fat yogurt too. Make sure you get Greek yogurt and not plain yogurt, the thickness really makes this dish fantastic!
  • Sweet Relish – to give this dish a little extra sweetness. I love this classic sweet relish which has a nice crunch and a sweet and tangy flavor.
  • Red Onion – for a savory flavor and a hint of crunch.
  • Whole Grain Mustard – for a really nice flavor and texture. Using a really good whole grain or Dijon mustard makes all the difference, so don’t use the basic yellow stuff for this recipe.
  • Lemon Juice

Is Tuna Salad Sweet or Savory?

This recipe is a little bit of both! I like using sweet relish to give the salad a tangy kick, but the other ingredients in this basic recipe are savory.

You can make this recipe with dill pickles or dill relish instead for a more savory bite. I find the sweet relish adds a nice complexity to this dish, so I recommend you give it a try.
