This Homemade Beeswax Lip Balm has gotten rave reviews from my family, friends, and co-workers.  Just a few simple ingredients transform into a great DIY gift or rainy day project to make with kids.

Last year we had a little “maker” fair at my work, and I sold jars of my honey, my beeswax hand salve, and little tins of this Homemade Beeswax Lip Balm.  All 3 were a huge hit – but I had people from across the company emailing me after and asking if they could buy more lip balm!

Easy Ways to Use Beeswax

If you have extra beeswax from a craft project, this all natural lip balm is the perfect way to use it up!  We always have pure beeswax in our fridge (keeps it cold) as beeswax is leftover from when we harvest honey from our beehives.

This recipe makes about 75 tubes, which is a lot, so it is sharable with family and friends. These tubes of homemade beeswax chap stick are great little gifts and stocking stuffers, or the perfect gift for your co-workers too.

What Ingredients Do I Need For this Homemade Beeswax Lip Balm?

Be sure to visit the recipe card below for full ingredient amounts and recipe instructions!

  • Natural Beeswax: I used beeswax from our beehives, but I’d recommend an organic cosmetic-grade beeswax.  Why organic and cosmetic-grade?  Because if you have any beeswax leftover from making this lip balm, you can use it for other amazing products as well.  I have a fantastic recipe for DIY Beeswax Furniture Polish that will make any wood furniture or surfaces shine like new (AND its one of the most popular recipes on my blog!). If there’s a local beekeeper in your area, I’d recommended starting there for wax, but if you buy online, make sure you get the good stuff!
  • Cocoa Butter: again, this natural and organic butter is best and what I’d recommend using.
  • Sunflower Oil
  • Vitamin E Oil: conditions and moisturizes your lips!
  • Rosemary Oil: I like to get food-grade rosemary oil instead of an aromatherapy oil.
  • Peppermint Oil: I used this food-grade oil, it gives the lip balm a minty flavor
  • Lanolin: another ingredient to condition and nurture your lips.
  • A Beeswax Lip Balm Kit:  I’ve also used little tins of lip balm (to cut down on our plastic usage) but honestly I do like the tubes best. They are simple to use and your fingers don’t get dirty every time you apply.

This recipe also uses a kitchen scale for precise measurements of the beeswax, cocoa butter, and sunflower oil.

Where Does Beeswax Come From?

As a beekeeper, we have a lot of wax left over from when we harvest honey from the hives. Bees make the wax to create “cells”, which form that hexagonal honeycomb pattern. The cells can be used to lay eggs, raise brood, and keep honey that the bees store for the winter. The honey is stored in these hexagonal cells, and when the moisture has been cured out from the honey, the bees will cover the cells with a wax seal.  This is called capping. It preserves the honey for the winter, and keeps the moisture from ruining their honey stores.

When we harvest honey, we scrape the honey and wax from the frames.  Once the honey gets filtered into a separate bucket (which we then jar up and use to make amazing honey recipes!) we are left with the wax.  We melt the wax to remove any impurities, and then keep it to make great products like this!

Here is a frame full of honey, perfectly capped in beeswax:

How Do You Make Lip Balm with Beeswax?

  1. Fill a medium sauce pan with water, place a large glass bowl on top, then bring the water to a gentle boil. Alternatively, you can use a double boiler if you have one.  Add the beeswax and cocoa butter to the glass bowl.  The steam from the boiling water will melt the wax and cocoa butter. It should take about 10 to 15 minutes for the wax to melt.
  2. Once melted, add the rest of the ingredients and whisk together until well combined.
  3. Follow the instructions on your lip balm kit (if using) to fill the tubes, or fill tubes or tins with a tincture dropper. Allow the beeswax lip balm to cool completely in the tubes before moving.  Enjoy!

Great recipe. I did it first time 100% according to instructions tractions and it came our wonderful. Second time I replaced sunflower oil with equal amount os olive oil and the balm is much softer in texture and spreads much easier than the sun flower oil. My personal preference is the original recipe
