What’s In These Vegan Sourdough Bread Croutons?
I cook with fresh produce from my garden and from Misfits Market– they sell fantastic fruit, vegetables, & pantry staples at a discounted price. We get Misfit boxes every other week and love picking out favorite produce for delivery. Get $10 off your first box here!
- Vegan Bread – I typically use my 4 ingredient no knead bread recipe, but you can also follow my Guide to Sourdough Starter. You can absolutely use bread from a bakery or a gluten free load from the store… but if you haven’t tried baking your own loaf, I promise it is worth it!
- Extra Virgin Olive Oil: I like to use this fruity olive oil which has a fantastic flavor and deep color- it’s really inexpensive online here, so I keep a few liters stocked up in my pantry. For the quality of oil you get, it’s an excellent value, I would highly recommend!
- Italian Seasoning Blend: usually has thyme, basil, rosemary, parsley, etc. I love this bright and flavorful Italian season mix which brings this amazing dish to life.
- Garlic Powder: Also a major pantry staple ingredient that gets used in our house daily! I love this garlic powder and add it to a lot of recipes that I would use fresh garlic in too.
- Onion Powder: adds a delicious and savory flavor to this dish as well, and the onion powder pairs nicely with the raw onion in the salad.
- Garlic Salt: for a little extra flavor than traditional salt. I like to use this garlic salt in my savory Italian dishes for that extra kick.
How To Make Vegan Croutons
-
Set the oven broiler to low. Place a baking rack is the center if the oven.
-
Cube the bread into small 1/2 inch cubes, add to a large mixing bowl.
-
To the bowl, add the olive oil, Italian seasoning, garlic powder and onion powder. Mix well until bread is coated in oil and spices, and place the bread in an even layer on a baking sheet. Place the baking sheet on the middle rack in the oven.
-
Bake over low broiler for about 5 minutes, then flip and broil for another 5 minutes on the other side.
-
Depending on the heat of your broiler it may take less (or more) time so pay close attention when the croutons are in the oven so they do not burn.
-
Once the croutons turn a golden brown, remove from oven and allow to cool. Top on soups or salads… Or just eat a handful as a snack. Yep, they are that good!
