Jump to RecipeThis huckleberry jam without pectin is a delicious fresh huckleberry recipe made with natural ingredients and chia seeds. This jam is delicious and can last up to 2 weeks in the refrigerator!
It’s great to spread on fresh pancakes or waffles, add into a peanut butter sandwich, stir into warm oatmeal, or spread on toast.
It’s huckleberry season on our homestead, and this huckleberry jam without pectin was the first recipe I made this year with our berries! We live on a heavily forested homestead in New England, and almost all our back bush are wild black huckleberry plants. Each year in late July/early August we start seeing ripe fruit ready to be picked.
It’s such a small window to pick these berries (usually just one week for us!) so we try to pick as many as we can. I made this delicious and fresh huckleberry jam with our wild berries this year, and it turned out fantastic!
This Wild Huckleberry Jam Recipe Is:

One of the Best Huckleberry Recipes for Seasonal Fruit
Huckleberries are a close cousin of blueberries, and they are tart, sweet, and delicious berries that begin to ripen (at least by us in Massachusetts!) in mid summer. This delicious huckleberry jelly is a great way to use up those sweet wild berries, and can last in the fridge for up to 2 weeks.
Note: this isn’t a canning/preserving recipe that lasts for months, it’s a fresh berry jam recipe that has a limited shelf life of just a few weeks. For long term preserving, I’d recommend freezing huckleberries to use later in the winter, or following a certified preserving recipe from a canning guide!
What’s In This Fresh Huckleberry Jam Recipe?
Be sure to visit the recipe card below for full ingredient amounts and recipe instructions!
- Huckleberries – we picked our huckleberries straight off the plants. During the summer months, keep an eye out for huckleberries at your local store or farmer’s market. Depending on where you live, you may be able to find fresh huckleberries in season!
- Granulated Sugar: I like this organic sugar for my recipes
- Water – I used tap water
- Fresh lemon juice
- Chia Seeds – a nutritious thickener for fresh jams and jellies – chia seeds are fantastic to add into smoothies or enjoy as a chia seed pudding. These little seeds are super versatile (ever heard of chia pets?) and are wonderful to cook and bake with!
- Mini Jam Jars – I love these adorable quilted 4 ounce jam jars – I use them for small batch jams and jellies this this recipe, and they are also great to store my homemade beeswax recipes too! They jars are also cute enough to give away as gifts for homemade jams.
