Ingredients

  • 2 slices bread use gluten free if desired
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 2 slices mozzarella or white American cheese
  • 2 tablespoons pizza sauce see below notes for THE best homemeade pizza sauce recipe
  • 1/2 cup your favorite pizza toppings

Instructions

  • Heat a skillet or pan over low heat.
  • Take 2 slices of bread, and top with a thin layer of pizza sauce. Add 2 slices of cheese, add optional pizza toppings, and close the sandwich so the pizza sauce is on the inside. Butter the outside pieces of bread, and place in a skillet.
  • Toast on low heat for 2 or 3 minutes until bottoms of the grilled cheese begins to brown.  Flip, and continue to cook for another 2 or 3 minutes.  To help the cheese melt, you can place a lid over the pan after flipping the sandwich.
  • Once cheese has melted, remove pan from heat, carefully slice sandwich, and enjoy!

Notes

Dietary Modifications

  • This recipe is naturally vegetarian - just make sure you use vegetarian pizza toppings in the sandwich to keep it that way.
  • For a gluten free pizza grilled cheese, use gluten free bread.
  • To make vegan or dairy free, just substitute out the cheese for a vegan version, and the butter for olive oil to toast the bread.
