This whole wheat garlic knots recipe is a better holiday side dish made with whole grains! These garlic bread bites are a fantastic appetizer or side dish to serve up at your next holiday meal.
Add the warm water, instant yeast, and maple syrup to a large mixing bowl. Stir and allow to sit for 5 minutes until the yeast begins to bloom/foam in the water. Add the garlic powder, salt, and stir in the flour 1 cup at a time, starting with the One Degree Organics Sprouted Whole Wheat Flour. Mix the dough until it is well combined.
Knead the dough for about 5 minutes, adding more flour if the dough is too sticky. Place the kneaded dough back into the bowl. Pour 1 tablespoon of the olive oil over the dough, and flip the dough to make sure it's coated in the olive oil. Cover and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour.
When ready to bake, preheat the oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
Divide the dough in half, and each of the halves into 8 pieces. This recipe makes 16 knots. Take the dough for one knot, and roll it into a 9 or 10 inch strip with your palms. Take the two ends of the dough: make a loop with one end, and feed the other end through the loop to make a knot. Like you're completing the first step of tying your shoes (see embedded video for a quick how-to!). Place the knot on the baking sheet lined with parchment paper, and repeat until all the knots are tied.
Place the baking sheet in the oven, and bake for 18-24 minutes until the garlic knots are golden brown on top. Remove from oven.
Brush each garlic knot with olive oil and chopped garlic, and top with chopped parsley and chili flakes. Serve with a warm marinara dipping sauce, enjoy!
