Oven-Baked Honey Garlic Chicken Nuggets

We rarely eat meat on our homestead, but when we do, we do it RIGHT!  These baked honey garlic chicken breast nuggets are full of tender white meat chicken served with a bold tangy sauce made from raw honey.  A truly family-friendly meal both kids and adults will devour.

This recipe was my hubby’s idea (thanks Brett!) and was unbelievaly, mouth-wateringly good. We served these with Crispy Oven Baked Fries and my dad’s homemade coleslaw recipe for a fantastic and filling meal. The chicken was super tender, perfect dipped in the sauce, and made completely on one sheet pan.  We made about 2lbs of chicken, and while there were leftovers… there weren’t many.  We took these babies down.

What’s In These Honey Garlic Chicken Nuggets?

  • Chicken: I used chicken breasts, cut into cube ‘nuggets.’ You can use a different cut of chicken meat if you prefer, or a different protein all together.  I can’t wait to replicate this recipe using tofu!
  • All Purpose Flour: I normally use King Arthur organic all purpose flour for all my recipes, I love the consistency and texture of the crumb this flour produces. If you are gluten free, then a gluten free flour would be a nice substitute in this dish.
  • Smoked Paprika: give an additional depth of flavor to the breading.
  • Garlic Powder: Also a major pantry staple ingredient that get used in our house daily! I love this garlic powder and add it to a lot of recipes that I use fresh garlic in too.
  • Onion Powder: adds a delicious and savory flavor to this dish as well, and the onion powder pairs nicely with the garlic flavor in the salad.
  • cayenne, and
  • Italian Seasoning Blend: usually has thyme, basil, rosemary, parsley, etc. I love this bright and flavorful Italian season mix which brings this amazing dish to life.
  • Eggs: to hold the breading to the chicken.
  • Raw Honey: We use our own honey, straight out of the beehives for us!  As beekeepers, we have plenty of raw honey so I try to use it in all my recipes instead of sugar.  I’d recommend trying a local farmers market to find the best raw honey in your area. Or else, this raw organic honey online here is the next best thing.
  • Garlic: I use fresh garlic when I have it, and this great jarred organic garlic when I don’t have fresh. It’s actually super convenient to have pre-chopped garlic on hand for quick and easy meal prep.
  • Worcestershire sauce: gives the sauce a bright and tangy flavor, without all the sodium of using a soy sauce.
My recipe for Raw Honey Garlic Sauce is what we used for this recipe, and was absolutely perfect on this crunchy, crispy white meat chicken.  The sauce would be great on any protein, baked veggies, or rice.  Made with 3 simple ingredients: raw honey, raw garlic, and Worcestershire sauce!

AreThere Meatless Options for Chicken?

Don’t eat chicken?  No worries!  There are so many amazing vegan chicken options out there – if you are plant-based and don’t eat meat, you can substitute any of those.  You can also use tofu, tempeh, seitan, or  soy curls.  The plant-based possibilities are endless!

How Do I Make These Honey Garlic Chicken Nuggets?

  1. Preheat the oven to 425 degrees Fahrenheit.  Line a large sheet pan (or two smaller sheet pans) with parchment paper, and add 2 tablespoons of sunflower oil to each pan, tilt pan to coat the parchment paper evenly with the oil.  Set aside.
  2. In a medium bowl, mix the flour, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, Italian seasoning, cayenne pepper, and salt.
  3. In another medium bowl, crack the eggs and scramble well to combine.
  4. To bread the chicken, dip in the flour mixture, then egg, then flour again.  Place the dredged nuggets on the sheet pan in an even layer.  Repeat for all pieces of chicken.
  5. Place the chicken in the oven and bake for 15 minutes, flip, and bake for another 5.  Chicken should be cooked through and golden brown on the outside.
  6. Pour honey garlic sauce over chicken, or sip each nugget into the sauce before eating.  Enjoy!

A Few Notes About Raw Honey

Raw honey is just honey that has not been pasteurized!  We take our honey straight from the hive, and don’t process or subject it to high heat.  Pasteurizing can kill bad (and beneficial) macrobiotics in the honey. You can use normal store-bought honey for this recipe… it doesn’t have to be raw.  That is just the way we like to keep our honey.  Babies under the age of 1 should not be given honey, and pregnant women should avoid unpasteurized foods.  Eat responsibly!

The best place to find raw honey is straight from your local beekeeper!  Check out a farmer’s market or farm stand near you – or reach out to your county or state beekeeping association to connect with beekeeper’s near by.  Support local bees, local keepers, and enjoy the sweet benefits.

Ingredients
  

  • 2 16 ounce chicken breasts, cut into 1 inch cubes *
  • 1.5 cups all purpose flour
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 tablespoon paprika
  • 1 tablespoon garlic powder
  • 1 tablespoon onion powder
  • 1 tablespoon Italian seasoning
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup sunflower oil or other high heat oil
  • 1/2 cup Raw Honey Garlic Sauce recipe below
