We have been loving homemade pizza lately! Its such a great dinner on the weekend, takes very little time to prep, and only about 15 minutes to cook. And we usually have a lot of leftover pizza toppings and pizza sauce… so what better way to enjoy them again than in a pizza grilled cheese!

This Midwestern Fusion dish combines both grilled cheese and pizza, two unbelievably cheese and delicious dinners merged into one. It takes about 5 minutes to cook, and a quick and yummy lunch is ready in no time.

This Grilled Cheese with Pizza Sauce Recipe Is:

  • Toasty
  • Melty
  • Gooey
  • Packed with Flavor: the homemade pizza sauce is where its at and brightens this sandwich up
  • Versatile: Use any pizza toppings you have on hand!
  • A Great Dinner Idea

What’s In This Vegetarian Pizza Grilled Cheese Sandwich Recipe?

  • Bread: any kind you would normally use for a sandwich. You can use white, wheat, rye, gluten free, sourdough, or pumpernickel.
  • Cheese: sliced mozzarella or white American slices work best in this sandwich, but again any cheese you would normally use on a pizza would be great.
  • Pizza Sauce: my no-cook tomato paste homemade pizza sauce is the secret weapon in my pizza… and this pizza grilled cheese recipe. You can absolutely use store bought pizza sauce, but if you have a can of tomato paste, garlic, and some spices, I’d encourage you try homemade!  The flavor and the freshness make all the difference.
  • Pizza Toppings: go wild, use your favorites.  For a veggie pizza I like to use onion, bell pepper, mushrooms, and pineapple.  If you have leftover pizza toppings, whatever they are, throw them in this sandwich!
  • Butter or cooking spray for spraying the pan: you can also use olive oil for a vegan version.

Sourdough Pizza Grilled Cheese for the WIN

Thanks to my easy sourdough starter, we’ve been cranking out homemade sourdough pizza dough a lot lately!  And I’ve also been making a lot of homemade no cook pizza sauce too – which is super simple to make.  The pizza sauce is so good on its own, you can use it as a dip for your grilled cheese too.

How Do I Make Pizza Grilled Cheese?

  1. Heat a skillet or pan over low heat.
  2. Assemble the pizza sandwich, between the slices of bread spread the pizza sauce , add the cheese and any pizza toppings you have to the sandwich.  Butter the outside pieces of bread, and place in the skillet.
  3. Toast on low heat for 2 or 3 minutes until bottoms of the grilled cheese begins to brown.  Flip, and continue to cook for another 2 or 3 minutes.  To help the cheese melt, you can place a lid over the pan after flipping the sandwich. Once cheese has melted, remove pan from heat, carefully slice sandwich, and enjoy!

Dietary Modifications

  • This recipe is naturally vegetarian – just make sure you use vegetarian pizza toppings in the sandwich to keep it that way.
  • For a gluten free pizza grilled cheese, use gluten free bread.
  • To make vegan or dairy free, just substitute out the cheese for a vegan version, and the butter for olive oil to toast the bread.
