Weekend benedicts are a favorite on our homestead, and this tahini hollandaise sauce is the absolute perfect sauce to drizzle over your benny!  I’ve made a few different Hollandaise sauces (one with chickpeas, and one with silken tofu) and this tahini version may be the best one yet – made with no butter.

It’s a bright and lemony sauce that goes so well with savory breakfast benedicts or veggies. We enjoyed this hollandaise sauce over my sheet pan hash browns and WOW, it stole the show.

This Tahini Hollandaise Sauce Is:

  • Bright
  • Creamy
  • Citrus-y
  • Savory
  • Loaded with Flavor
  • Earthy
  • Vegan, gluten free, and dairy free
  • Ready in about 5 minutes!

Dairy Free Hollandaise Sauce With No Butter!

This dairy free hollandaise with tahini recipe is a fantastic pantry-staple sauce!  It uses almost all ingredients you would have in your dry pantry or cupboards – most of which you probably have on hand. Keeping a well-stocked pantry makes it easy to come up with delicious meals using a few staples you can rotate.  I made a list of my Top 125 Plant-Based Pantry Staples that always keep stocked.

What’s In This Sesame Hollandaise Sauce?

See the recipe card below for full ingredient amounts and recipe instructions!

  • Tahini: A fantastic and flavorful spread made from ground sesame seeds. I use this tahini which is fantastic in any dish. It adds a nutty and sweet flavor.
  • Hot Water – you can use boiling water, or just hot tap water.
  • Garlic
  • Mustard Powder: I love adding this mustard powder to my recipes – it adds a nice sharpness and bright yellow color.
  • Extra virgin olive oil
  • Fresh lemon juice
  • Turmeric – a staple in our spice cabinet!
  • Paprika – for a hint of spice and great flavor! Also, makes a beautiful garnish for this sauce.
  • Salt

The Best Blender for Making Sauces

I recommend using a good-quality high speed blender for this recipe. I have a fantastic Vitamix blender, which I have been using for years, and it gets daily use in our home.

Choose a blender that has a lot of power, and can pulverize even the toughest of ingredients. My blender can chop ice, dates, frozen fruits, make soups, and even blend nuts into homemade nut butter. Using a good high-speed blender will make perfectly creamy smoothies and sauces every time!

How Do I Make Hollandaise Sauce without Butter?

  1. To a blender, add the tahini, lemon juice, garlic, and HALF of the hot water (save the other half), mustard powder, turmeric, and salt. Blend until the sauce is a smooth and creamy consistency.
  2. If it is too thick, add more hot water, 1 tablespoon at a time until it reaches your desired consistency.   The thickness will depend on what kind of tahini you use (some brands are more smooth than others)!
  3. Pour the finished sauce into a ramekin or serving dish, and sprinkle extra paprika for garnish. Drizzle over vegetables, benedicts, or hash browns.

Note: this is not a classic Hollandaise by any means, it’s a dairy free version that is made without butter. If you are looking for the real deal, you can find Julia Child’s recipe here!
