OK, our basil plant is taking over our Aerogarden at the moment!  We have a 7 pod Aerogarden and we have: basil, Genovese basil, parsley, and sage. Our basil is starting to creep into parsley territory, so I’ve been pruning and making these delicious basil smoothies in the morning for my husband and I.

Fresh ginger root and basil together gives this smoothie is a major flavor kick. It has a very bright flavor that pairs so nicely with fresh fruit – this is one fun smoothie you HAVE to try!

Grow Fresh Basil in Your Kitchen All Year Long

We got this great 6-Pod Aerogarden which is fantastic for growing herbs in the winter.  We actually got it when we lived in a smaller apartment, but even now that we own an acreage we still use it year-round!  I love growing herbs on my countertop like fresh basil, dill, mint, sage, thyme, parsley, and lemon balm. It uses LED lights and water, so no messy soil needed – you can have fresh herbs at your fingertips any time. I love picking a few springs of parsley to chop on pastas, adding basil leaves to soups, and tossing some dill in with my pasta salads. This Aerogarden is a great gift for anyone who would like fresh herbs… no big kitchen or green thumb required!

What’s In This Sweet Basil Ginger Smoothie Recipe?

See the recipe card below for full ingredient amounts and recipe instructions!

  • Basil Leaves: you can use any kind you have on hand: Thai Basil, Genovese Basil, or Lemon Basil!  I’d recommend using fresh leaves over dried basil for this one.
  • Pineapple
  • Mango
  • Ginger: Use fresh ginger root if you have it! I love adding fresh ginger to my dishes, or this great ground ginger to my smoothies if I don’t have fresh on hand – the ginger gives it a nice kick and spicy flavor.
  • Banana
  • Chia Seeds: these add thickness to the smoothie.
  • Water
  • Ice
  • Plant-Based Protein Powder: I love plant based protein lines, and I always keep some on hand to add to my smoothies.

Frozen Fruit Recipes For the Win!

I used frozen fruit for this recipe instead of making them from scratch. By using freezer ingredients, I can stock up when they are on sale, and use them in all kinds of great dishes. It saves me a trip to the store, and I can have frozen fruit to use in smoothies in no time. Check out all my recipes that use Freezer Ingredients on The Herbeevore – great for those days when you want a meal ready fast! And check out my Top 125 Plant-Based Pantry Staples for long-lasting staples that I always keep on hand.

If you grow lemon basil or lemon balm in your garden, you can cut the leaves, wash them, and put them in an airtight bag to freeze. That way you can enjoy frozen lemon basil in your recipes and smoothies all year long!
