 This oat milk bubble tea recipe is a refreshing drink that is perfect anytime. It makes a great morning beverage, a fun afternoon snack, or just a mid-day treat. I first had bubble tea when I lived in California 10 years ago, and I have been in love with it since. Bubble tea, or boba tea, is a traditional Vietnamese drink that is made with tea, milk, and cooked tapioca pearls also called boba pearls.

The chewy tapioca balls are such a delicious treat in this tasty drink! Made with simple ingredients, this is one of our favorite vegan options for a refreshing drink.

Anytime I pass by bubble tea shops, I have to stop in! I hadn’t had one in so long, I decided to have a little fun and make it at home. I used black tea and a simple creamy 2-ingredient oat milk that I made with sprouted rolled oats. + water

What’s In This Oat Milk Boba Tea Recipe?

  • Plant-based milks – I used oat milk, but there are so many great vegan options – any type of milk you prefer. You can also use Rolled Oats to make your own oat milk.
  • Water: I used filtered tap water
  • Tea: you can use any kind you like, but I used black tea as it’s a favorite of mine. I’ll list a few more options below!
  • Sweetener – you can use a natural sweetened like maple syrup or agave nectar. Or you can use coconut sugar simple syrup or a brown sugar syrup too.
  • Black Tapioca Pearls – make sure yours is vegan, and gluten free too if desired.

Types of Tea for Bubble Tea

I like using black tea in mine, but there are so many great options and varieties you can try!  Here are a alternatives if you want to try a different type of tea: green tea, jasmine tea, earl grey, or even herbal teas like chamomile or a fruit tea.

Ingredients to Make Vegan Bubble Tea

​I like to make my own oat milk with oats, but you can use a store bought plant based milk instead.  Some great options are almond milk, soy milk, coconut milk, or even cashew milk for a creamy flavor.

First of all, get your oats ready! Rolled Oats are perfect – make sure to use rolled oats and not quick oats for this one. Prep and cook your tapioca pearls too. You’ll also need a large glass, a fine-mesh strainer or a nut milk bag for this vegan milk tea.

These reusable stainless steel straws are perfect for getting to the bottom of your bubble tea, and also great to wash and reuse time and time again. Regular straws won’t pick up the chewy tapioca pearls, so make sure you use extra wide straws.

How Do I Make Vegan Boba Tea with Oat Milk?

  1. Make the oat milk: in a blender, add rolled oats and water. Allow the oats to soak for 10 minutes. Blend on high speed for 1 minute. Drain the oat milk slowly through a fine mesh strainer or a nut milk bag. If using a store bought non-dairy milk, then skip this step!
  2. Make the tea: Boil the remaining 6 cups of water for the tea, steep your tea bags for 10-15 minutes. Add the natural sweetener to the tea. Allow the tea to cool.
  3. Cook the tapioca pearls: bring a small pot of water to a boil, and add the tapioca pearls to the pot. Cook over low heat for about 5 minutes until the pearls become a dark black color and are cooked all the way through. Test one pearl to make sure it’s done with a slotted spoon. Drain and rinse under cold water.
  4. Assemble your drink: add the cooked boba pearls to the bottom of a glass, add the steeped tea, and pour in the oat milk to top. Add an extra wide straw for the boba pearls. Taste and add more sweetener if desired. Serve over ice cubes and enjoy.

Dietary Modifications

  • This recipe is vegan and dairy free.
  • To make gluten free, make your own oat milk with certified gluten free oats and water, like the recipe states above. Many commercial store-bought oat milks and dairy free milks are not gluten free, so ensure you are buying a certified GF variety or make your own oat milk at home.

Ingredients
  

  • 2 cups Plant-Based Milk I used oat milk, see recipe below!
  • 6 cups water
  • 6 tea bags I used black tea
  • 1/4 up maple syrup or other natural sweetener
  • 3/4 cup boba tapioca pearls

Homemade Oat Milk Recipe

    Instructions
     

    • Make the oat milk: in a blender, add the One Degree Organic Sprouted Rolled Oats and water.  Allow the oats to soak for 10 minutes.  Blend on high speed for 1 minute. Drain the oat milk slowly through a nut milk bag. Do not squeeze the oat milk through the bag, or else the oat milk can become slimy. Allow it to filter naturally, without applied pressure.
    • Make the tea. Boil the remaining 6 cups of water for the tea, steep your tea bags for 5 to 10 minutes.  Add the natural sweetener to the tea. Allow the tea to cool.
    • Cook the tapioca pearls: bring a small pot of water to a boil, and add the tapioca pearls to the pot. Cook over low heat for about 5 minutes until the pearls become a dark black color and are cooked all the way through. Test one pearl to make sure it's done. Rinse under cold water, and drain.
    • Make the tea: add the cooked pearls to the bottom of a glass, add 1.5 cups of the steeped tea, and pour in the 1/2 cup oat milk to top.  Add an extra wide straw for the boba pearls.  Taste and add more sweetener if desired… enjoy!

        Yes, I understand that most store-bought oat milk is not gluten free – that is why the first step of this recipe calls to make your own oat milk with certified gluten free oats, like the kind I linked to. Store-bought oat milk is not an ingredient in this recipe, you must read the recipe and make your own oat milk which is gluten free.
