This classic dressing is a hibachi staple, and transforms plain salad greens to the next level.  Toss with freshly chopped crisp iceberg lettuce, sliced radishes, julienned carrots, tomatoes, and your favorite proteins.

When I go out to Japanese restaurants for veggie sushi or hibachi, I always love the flavorful salads they serve with the meal. The dressing is always so bright, sweet, and yummy, so I wanted to make a homemade dressing. My Japanese-inspired dressing has all the tastes of this classic restaurant creamy dressing with so much flavor.

And to make it, just throw everything into a blender and in a few minutes you have a great fresh addition to any simple salad.  If you have leftover dressing you can also use it as a marinade – it would be delicious with my Perfect Crispy Baked Tofu.  Or use this wonderful recipe as a dipping sauce for chopped raw vegetables – the possibilities are endless.

Ingredients In Hibachi Ginger Dressing Recipe

See the recipe card below for full ingredient amounts and recipe instructions!

  • Fresh carrot, Ginger, Garlic, Green Onions
  • Extra Virgin Olive Oil: I like to use this fruity olive oil which has a fantastic flavor and deep color- it’s inexpensive & I like to keep a few liters stocked up in my pantry.  You could substitute avocado oil or peanut oil instead.
  • Rice wine vinegar: I love this sweet & tangy rice vinegar, but you can substitute white wine vinegar too.
  • Sesame oil
  • Raw Honey: A small amount goes a long way for this tasty Japanese salad dressing.  This tasty recipe uses raw organic honey is the next best thing.
  • Tamari: tamari is a gluten-free version of soy sauce. Tamari has a bright salty flavor, and adds a really nice depth of umami to this dish.
  • White Miso
  • Water

Is There a Vegan Alternative to Honey?

Yes, you can substitute out the honey in this recipe for agave nectar or maple syrup. I prefer agave nectar, it’s my go-to kitchen sweetener because it’s absolutely delicious, and buying organic agave is inexpensive (compared to other organic sweeteners).  It tastes great in this homemade ginger salad dressing recipe.

The Best Blender for Salad Dressings

I’ve owned a lot of blenders, but my Vitamix is definitely the best one I’ve owned. It works great for this sesame ginger dressing. This high-speed blender will blend even the toughest of ingredients into pulp.  I prefer using my blender for recipes like this, as it’s much easier to clean the Vitamix. This is definitely one kitchen appliance we use on a daily basis!

How Do I Make This Carrot Ginger Japanese Dressing?

  1. Add all ingredients to a blender, and puree until smooth.
  2. Check dressing thickness and add more water, one tablespoon at a time, until desired consistency.
  3. Serve over fresh green salad with sesame seeds or use as a marinade for tofu.
  4. Keep leftovers in an airtight container (I like to use a pint sized mason jar) and keep in the fridge for up to 1 week.  Shake before serving.

The first time I made this, I omitted a sweetener… and it was really lacking something.  I chose to go with honey and it really made a difference in the taste.

The dressing does get a little thick – so make sure to reserve extra water and thin it out if needed.  Store in an airtight container (I always use mason jars, because they are perfect for dressings like this) and save it for up to a week in the fridge.
