These Instant Pot garlic mashed potatoes are a new holiday tradition for us! They are super simple to make, can be prepared ahead of time (and baked day-of), and turn out SO creamy and delish.
Brett takes his mashed potatoes very seriously. He is team #NoLumps, so when we mash them we really mash them! I, on the other hand, don’t really care about the texture as long as the flavor is there. This mashed potatoes use a SECRET SPICE to make them crazy delicious – and we can both agree on the flavor of these potatoes.

Instant Pot Side Dishes for the WIN!
For all my recipes I use the 8-Quart Instant Pot Ultra, its larger than the standard models (which are only 6 quart) so I have extra room to meal prep and batch cook more meals for the week. The Ultra model also has some great extra settings like cake baking and yogurt making which are really neat. I love that everything can cook in one pot, which makes for way less dishes and hands-off cooking. The Instant Pot is hands-down my favorite kitchen appliance, and actually makes my life so much easier.

- Milk – any variety you’d like… but the higher the fat content, the creamier it will be! I try to add Whole Milk or Half & Half if I have it on hand… or you can use full-fat coconut milk for a plant based option.
- Butter – you can use regular unsalted sweet cream butter for this recipe, or a plant based version.
- Montreal Steak Spice: Our favorite spice blend, probably the one we use most in our home! Montreal Steak Spice is a blend of garlic, pepper, salt, oregano, crushed pepper flakes, and a little dill for an amazing flavor. With a half-Canadian household, you better believe we put this spice on everything!
- Garlic Powder: Also a major pantry staple ingredient that gets used in our house daily! I love this garlic powder and add it to a lot of recipes that I would use fresh garlic in too.
Secret Ingredient Mashed Potatoes
The secret to making these mashed potatoes so flavorful is….. Montreal Steak Spice seasoning! Its one of our favorite spices to use, REALLY we put it on almost everything. You can read all the recipes that we use Montreal Steak Spice in here! I love it because it already has salt and pepper, some garlic, and dill that gives everything a je ne sais qua.
Can I Leave the Skins on Mashed Potatoes?
Yes! I always leave the skins on my mashed potatoes as it gives you extra nutrients by eating the peel. You can peel yours before cooking if desired. Highly recommend keeping the skins on though- as they whip right into the potatoes and you can barely tell they’re there!

Instant Pot Garlic Mashed Potatoes
Ingredients
- 8 potatoes about 3 lbs, skins on diced into small pieces
- 12 cloves garlic whole
- 2 cups water
- 1 cup milk you can choose any variety (whole, 2%, half & half)
- 4 tablespoons butter
- 1 tablespoon Montreal Steak Spice
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
Instructions
- Add the diced potatoes and the water to the Instant Pot. Set on High or Manual for 8 minutes.
- Once finished cooking, do a quick release. Keep the Instant Pot on ‘warm’ setting for the next few steps. Drain the water from the potatoes, and place the potatoes back in the Instant Pot.
- Stir in the milk, butter, Montreal steak spice, and garlic powder.
- Using a potato masher, whip until there are no more lumps in the potatoes.
- Taste and adjust seasonings, adding more if needed
