This French onion garlic bread will be the star of your next dinner party!  I made some of this rich & garlicky bread to go with our alfredo the other night, and it was the perfect side dish.  The caramelized onions and melted Gruyere cheese make this garlic bread extra flavorful and decadent.  I broil the bread to get it extra crunchy (much crunchier than the toaster without burning it) and top it with garlic, onions, and a thick layer of melty Gruyere cheese.  The perfect French and Italian side dish for any meal.

A Great Clean-Out-The-Fridge Side Dish Recipe!

This French Onion garlic bread recipe is the perfect vehicle to use up any older produce, spreads, cheese, or veggies you have on hand. Great for when you have a few onions you don’t know what to do with… or for that extra wedge of cheese in the back of the fridge.  It doesn’t have to be Gruyere cheese, you can use any sharp melty cheese you’d like.   A fantastic way to use onions before they goes bad – this French garlic bread is delicious.

How Do I Make French Onion Soup Garlic Bread?

  1. Caramelize the Onions: In a Dutch Oven or other heavy lidded pot, add the onions, olive oil, and sea salt.  Saute on low heat, and stir with a wooden spoon for 25 minutes until the onions begin to reduce. After 25 minutes, add the vegan Worcestershire sauce and saute for 5 additional minutes.
  2. While the caramelized onions are sauteeing: place the slices of bread on a sheet pan, and set aside.
  3. In a small bowl, combine the minced garlic, garlic powder, olive oil, and red pepper flakes. Stir well, and set aside.
  4. Place the sheet pan with the bread in the oven and broil on low for 2-3 minutes until the top turns lightly brown.
  5. Remove bread from oven and flip the bread, so the toasted side is down. Brush each of the slices of bread with the garlic and olive oil mixture, saving about 1/2 of the mixture for later.  Place the bread back into the oven and broil for 2-3 minutes until golden brown, but keep an eye so the bread doesn’t burn.
  6. Remove the toast from the sheet pan, top with the caramelized onions, and a handful of Gruyere on each slice of bread, and broil for 1 minute until cheese begins to brown and bubble.
