What’s In this French Garlic Bread Recipe?
- Bread: Use gluten free bread if you are coeliac or do not eat gluten
- Garlic: I use fresh garlic when I have it, and this great jarred organic garlic when I don’t have fresh. It’s actually super convenient to have pre-chopped garlic on hand for quick and easy meal prep.
- Garlic Powder: Also a major pantry staple ingredient that get used in our house daily! I love this garlic powder and add it to a lot of recipes that I would use fresh garlic in too.
- Olive Oil: I like to use this fruity Zoe olive oil which has a fantastic flavor and deep color- it’s really inexpensive online here, so I keep a few liters stocked up in my pantry. For the quality of oil you get, it’s an excellent value, I would highly recommend!
- Red Chili Pepper Flakes: for a little heat in this great side dish recipe.
- Onions
- Worcestershire Sauce: for that unbelievably rich umami flavor, but make sure you use a vegan variety if you don’t eat meat (some can contain anchovies). Annie’s makes a great vegan Worcestershire sauce you can buy here!
- Garlic Salt: for a little extra flavor than traditional salt. I like to use this garlic salt in my savory Italian dishes for that extra kick.
- Gruyere Cheese – the classic sharp cheese used in French Onion Soup.
A Great Clean-Out-The-Fridge Side Dish Recipe!
This French Onion garlic bread recipe is the perfect vehicle to use up any older produce, spreads, cheese, or veggies you have on hand. Great for when you have a few onions you don’t know what to do with… or for that extra wedge of cheese in the back of the fridge. It doesn’t have to be Gruyere cheese, you can use any sharp melty cheese you’d like. A fantastic way to use onions before they goes bad – this French garlic bread is delicious.
How Do I Make French Onion Soup Garlic Bread?
-
Caramelize the Onions: In a Dutch Oven or other heavy lidded pot, add the onions, olive oil, and sea salt. Saute on low heat, and stir with a wooden spoon for 25 minutes until the onions begin to reduce. After 25 minutes, add the vegan Worcestershire sauce and saute for 5 additional minutes.
- While the caramelized onions are sauteeing: place the slices of bread on a sheet pan, and set aside.
- In a small bowl, combine the minced garlic, garlic powder, olive oil, and red pepper flakes. Stir well, and set aside.
- Place the sheet pan with the bread in the oven and broil on low for 2-3 minutes until the top turns lightly brown.
- Remove bread from oven and flip the bread, so the toasted side is down. Brush each of the slices of bread with the garlic and olive oil mixture, saving about 1/2 of the mixture for later. Place the bread back into the oven and broil for 2-3 minutes until golden brown, but keep an eye so the bread doesn’t burn.
- Remove the toast from the sheet pan, top with the caramelized onions, and a handful of Gruyere on each slice of bread, and broil for 1 minute until cheese begins to brown and bubble.
