This fire cider with honey tonic recipe is homemade and packs a big flavor punch! Easy to make with whole clean ingredients, and it tastes great.

Loaded with turmeric, apple cider vinegar, citrus, garlic, honey, spices, and chili peppers.  We use raw honey straight from our beehives… definitely a beekeeping perk we enjoy all year long.

We absolutely love taking a big spoonful of fire cider in the winter (or summers) – and this fire cider with honey is easy to make at home. It’s spicy, it’s sweet, and loaded with bold flavors.

I was first introduced to fire cider at a store in Vermont a few years back – they were selling a bottle of tonic which was locally made in VT, had turmeric, garlic, horseradish, and jalapeños in it… and I was instantly in love!  My husband and I bought an expensive bottle, went through it quickly, and ordered a few more and had them shipped down to us. Needless to say, our fire cider deliveries were quickly adding up, so we decided to make it ourselves.

A Great Way to Take Apple Cider Vinegar

We like to take one spoonful of this honey fire cider daily. I always had this fire cider with honey tonic strained and just in liquid form – but my husband had a great idea to reuse the solids from after I strained out the tonic.

He saved all that good pulp and blended it with a little additional apple cider vinegar until it formed a paste.  We’ve been taking a spoonful of the tonic that way too and it really is just as amazing!

What’s In This Honey Fire Cider Recipe?

See the recipe card below for full ingredient amounts and recipe instructions!

  • Organic Lemon, Oranges, Onion, Horseradish
  • Apple Cider Vinegar, which gives this cider a little extra tang which is really fantastic! I love using this organic apple cider vinegar with the mother which has a great flavor.  I think it gives a nice extra sweetness and depth.
  • Raw Honey: We use our own honey, straight out of the beehives for us! I’d recommend trying a local farmers market to find the best raw honey in your area. Or else, this raw organic honey online here is the next best thing.
  • Turmeric – a staple in our spice cabinet! I try to add a teaspoon of turmeric into soups, stews, and rice dishes too.
  • Ginger: I love adding fresh ginger to my dishes, or this great ground ginger to my curries – the ginger gives it a nice kick and spicy flavor.
  • Garlic: I use fresh garlic when I have it, and this great jarred organic garlic when I don’t have fresh. It’s actually super convenient to have pre-chopped garlic on hand for quick and easy meal prep.
  • Spicy Peppers – you can use jalapeno, habanero, Thai chili peppers, or any hot pepper you prefer.

Is There a Vegan Alternative to Honey?

Yes, you can substitute out the honey in this recipe for agave nectar or maple syrup. I prefer agave nectar, it’s my go-to kitchen sweetener because it’s absolutely delicious, and buying organic agave is inexpensive (compared to other organic sweeteners).

It also bakes well, so I like to add it to my baked goods. While we typically eat vegan in our household, we definitely enjoy the fresh honey that we harvest from our sweet backyard beehives… if you can support a local beekeeper, please do!

Make Fire Cider in the Blender

I recommend using a good-quality high speed blender for this recipe. I have a fantastic Vitamix blender, which I have been using for years, and it gets daily use in our home.

Choose a blender that has a lot of power, and can pulverize even the toughest of ingredients. My blender can chop ice, dates, frozen fruits, make soups, and even blend nuts into homemade nut butter. Using a good high-speed blender will make perfectly creamy smoothies and sauces every time!

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup horseradish grated
  • 1/2 cup fresh ginger grated
  • 1 red onion chopped
  • 20 cloves garlic chopped
  • 1 lemon thinly sliced, with peel on
  • 1 orange thinly sliced, with peel on
  • 4 habanero peppers sliced
  • 1 tablespoon turmeric powder
  • 2 tablespoons raw honey
  • 3-5 cups apple cider vinegar

Instructions

  • Sanitize 2 quart-sized mason jars, and divide the ingredients in equal parts for each jar.  Begin by layering the horseradish, ginger, red onion, garlic, lemon, orange, habanero, turmeric, and agave into each jar. Fill the remaining space in each jar with apple cider vinegar – I used about 2 cups for each jar.
  • To seal, place a piece of parchment paper under each jar lid to prevent the lids from rusting.  Once the parchment paper is down, add the lid and the band and turn until tight. Store in a cool, dark place and let the fire cider steep for 4 weeks.  Shake once daily.
  • When you are ready to strain, strain the mixture through 2 layers of fine cheesecloth or a nut milk bag.  Sterilize jars for the fire cider, and it will last for up to a year.
  • For the solids, we like to keep them and blend with additional apple cider vinegar for an even more powerful pulpy tonic.
  • Take two tablespoons daily.

Notes

*Note: The recipe above made about 5 cups of tonic once it was all strained… and an additional 4 cups when the solids were blended with a little additional apple cider vinegar.  It should last you a long while!
