What’s In This Vegan Caramelized Red Onions Recipe?

See the recipe card below for full ingredient amounts and recipe instructions!

  • Red Onions: I used large red onions, which are super bright and flavorful –  they caramelize best!
  • Extra virgin olive oil
  • Salt
  • White Wine: I used a pinot grigio which coincidentally is also my favorite wine to drink…. so of course I had a glass too!  Use a nice wine that you would drink, any fruity white will work.
  • Worcestershire Sauce: for that unbelievably rich umami flavor, but make sure you use a plant-based variety if you don’t eat meat (some can contain anchovies).
  • Fresh garlic cloves

  2. Turn heat to low, and sauté for 10 more minutes with the lid off the pot. Add the white wine and cook for 10 minutes more.
  3. Add the vegan Worcestershire sauce and the minced garlic, and stir.  Cook for the remaining 5 minutes on medium heat – the onions should be soft, brown, and flavorful!
