Our friends gave us an electric smoker for a housewarming gift a while ago, and it has been great to smoke amazing things that aren’t meat. We’ve smoked some really fun ingredients like this tofu recipe, hard boiled eggs, and even Cheese-Itz (highly recommend!).  All taste awesome, and you can do so much with an electric smoker besides meat.  Our smoker has 4 shelves, so I like to throw in a tray of tofu, usually at the top if we have extra room. I add the smoked tofu to soups and stir fries which gives those dishes extra flavor.

The great thing about this recipe is that is can be so versatile. You can use any spice mixture or blend that you like.  I used Montreal Steak Spice which has pepper, oregano, garlic and dill. But your favorite spice blend would also be awesome. Use Italian, BBQ spice, sriracha, or even a Thai basil.  Anything goes! If you’re wondering how to smoke tofu, this is your guide.

How to Smoke Tofu in an Electric Smoker

  1. Set the electric smoker to 250 degrees Fahrenheit.
  2. Slice the tofu into 1 inch slabs. I found the thinner you slice them the more flavor they absorb.
  3. In a foil packet or a aluminum tray, add the tofu in an even layer and top with agave, olive oil, and seasonings of choice (we use Montreal Steak Spice!).
  4. Place the tofu in an upper rack, and smoke tofu for 6 to 8 hours.

Ingredients

  • 2 12-ounce packages tofu
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons agave nectar
  • 2 tablespoons corn starch
  • 1 tablespoon seasoning of choice I used Canadian steak spice

Instructions

  • Set the electric smoker to 250 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Slice the tofu into 1 inch slabs. I found the thinner you slice them the more flavor they absorb. Place tofu slabs in a foil packet or aluminum tray.
  • In a small bowl, add the olive oil and agave and stir well to combine. Using a silicon food brush, brush the top of the tofu with the olive oil and agave mixture. This will help your seasoning stick. Add Montreal Steak Spice evenly on top of the tofu.
  • Place the tofu in an upper rack, and smoke tofu for 6 to 8 hours.

Notes

I found 6 to 8 hours was a good time to smoke the tofu- bit you can keep it on longer for a smokier, more pronounced flavor.
