I use my Instant Pot for just about everything, including this creamy hummus!  I add the beans to the pot, pressure cook, then blend them up with the rest of the ingredients. Cooking beans from scratch is easy with a pressure cooker. Making your own hummus is a great and inexpensive way to make a healthy snack at home.

I love enjoying this smooth hummus as a dip for veggies, tortilla chips, bread, or pita chips. It’s also great to spread on a wrap or a sandwich. It’s a perfect snack anytime of day!

This Instant Pot Hummus Is:

  • Inexpensive to Make
  • No Soak
  • Tasty
  • Bright
  • Made without tahini
  • Vegan and naturally gluten-free
  • Protein Packed
  • Loaded with Flavor

What’s In This Instant Pot Hummus?

  • Dried Chickpeas, no soaking required before adding to the Instant Pot! I like using dry chickpeas instead of canned chickpeas for this recipe. Dried beans are cheaper than canned, and are simple to cook with an instant pot.
  • Water – don’t discard the cooking water, it’s used to thicken the hummus.
  • Extra virgin olive oil
  • Fresh Garlic Cloves
  • Fresh lemon juice
  • Cumin: also adds a really nice flavor to this recipe – cumin has a lightly smokey flavor found in a lot of soup and chili recipes.
  • Sea salt

Optional Additional Ingredients

If you have tahini, you can definitely add it, but I wanted to make a delicious version without the 2.  Its really hit or miss if I have tahini (sesame seed paste), so this hummus recipe can be made easily without it. You could also substitute a small amount of peanut butter instead.

You can add red chili flakes for a spicier hummus

Top with sesame seeds or other seeds if desired.

Add red peppers for a red pepper hummus! Play with different flavors of spices or added vegetables to make each batch of hummus unique.

How Do I Make Pressure Cooker Hummus Without Tahini?

  1. Add the chickpeas and water to the Instant Pot or Pressure Cooker.  Set to Manual, or High Pressure for 45 minutes.  After cooking time, allow the chickpeas to naturally release.  Do not discard water after cooking. Allow chickpeas to cool to room temperature.
  2. Add the chickpeas and 2 cups of the cooking water to a blender or a bowl of a food processor, and blend on high speed for 2 minutes.  If hummus is too thick, add a little more water, 1/2 cup at a time. Add the garlic, lemon juice, cumin, and salt.  Blend for an additional 2 minutes on high speed until all the flavors meld together. If you need more water, add as you blend.
  3. Refrigerate in an air-tight container for up to 5 days.

Instant Pot Hummus for the Easiest Meal Prep!

Of all my kitchen appliances, and I mean ALL of them, my Instant Pot pressure cooker is my most-used! I cook everything in it from beans and legumes, to soups and pasta dishes.

You can get Instant Pots in many sizes, but I like my 8-quart model, which is ideal for batch cooking and meal prep. It also has a quicker pressure-release feature which saves me even more cooking time.

I love that everything can cook in one pot, which makes for way less dishes and hands-off cooking. The Instant Pot is hands-down my favorite kitchen appliance, and actually makes my life so much easier.

Hi Buffy, I’m sorry to hear that. How much of the cooking water did you add? If you have a can of cooked chickpeas (or any other white bean) you can drain that add that blend it into the hummus to thicken it. Let me know how it turns out.
